In the 1850s Henry Johnson built a store, train water tank, post office, lodging and railroad depot. By 1869, "Johnson's Depot" was incorporated as Johnson City. Henry Johnson the unanimous choice for the city's first mayor. Johnson’s depot would later become the Appalachian Crossroads, a major railroad junction for a 3-state area.
  
Washington County was established in 1777 named in honor of General George Washington.
  
Washington county was also part of the state of Franklin from 1784-88, which was an attempt to create the 14th state prior to Tennessee
becoming a state in 1796.
